What should I expect during my sports massage?Consultation Before your massage, your therapist will chat to you to see exactly what you want to get out of the session. They’ll ask about any specific pains or injuries that you might want to work on. It's also common that you'll discuss your health, exercise habits, medications, and allergies. It’s important to be honest to ensure the treatment suits your needs. Preparation Before the massage, the therapist will ask you to remove the necessary clothing so they can access the parts of your body that will be massaged. They'll then step out of the room while you undress and make yourself comfortable on the massage table. If you're uncomfortable with this, discuss alternatives with your therapist. They may use oils, creams, or gels depending on the type of massage and your preferences or allergies. During the Massage Sports massages can be painful, as therapists work close to your pain threshold to relieve tension and knots. If the discomfort is too much, communicate with your therapist—they can adjust the pressure or technique to make it more comfortable. By understanding these stages, you can better prepare for your sports massage and achieve optimal results.

What sports massage techniques do you use?As an experienced massage therapist, Zoe uses a number of techniques and will combine them during your session, depending on your individual situation. The techniques used, may include: Effleurage Effleurage involves gentle stroking movements using the palms and fingers. The pressure and speed can vary depending on the stage and purpose of the massage. It is typically used at the beginning and end of a session to relax the client, warm the tissues, loosen muscles, and stimulate blood and lymph flow. It also helps the therapist assess the condition of the muscles and tissues. Petrissage Petrissage uses kneading motions to compress and release soft tissue. This can involve applying direct pressure or lifting and squeezing the muscles and skin. It provides a deeper effect than effleurage, improving mobility between tissue layers, stretching muscle fibres, relaxing muscles, and boosting blood and lymphatic circulation. Myofascial Release This technique stretches and loosens muscle tissue using gentle pressure along the muscle fibres. The strokes are held briefly and repeated until the muscles fully relax. Myofascial release helps free fascia that may restrict blood vessels or nerves, improving circulation and reducing muscle tightness, pain, and stiffness. Deep Tissue Massage Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle, tendons, and fascia to release chronic tension. It improves posture, flexibility, and range of motion. While it often involves firm pressure, it doesn’t have to be painful. The focus is on relieving tightness and tension effectively. Trigger Point Techniques This method focuses on specific tender areas, often linked to referred pain. Trigger point therapy helps eliminate pain, reduce tension, and improve circulation, flexibility, and coordination over time. While it can be uncomfortable, it often provides relief and pinpoints the source of discomfort. Deep Friction Massage Deep friction massage uses firm strokes across the grain of the muscle to reduce pain, increase blood flow, and break up scar tissue. It is an alternative to trigger point pressure and promotes healing in affected areas. Muscle Energy Techniques This approach helps lengthen tight or spasmed muscles, strengthen weak ones, and improve range of motion. The client actively contracts their muscles against gentle resistance applied by the therapist. This process is repeated to achieve maximum effect and improve muscle function.
